Running from 9 to 15 July 2007, the International Choral Conference brought together eight outstanding school choirs from Australia, Singapore, Mainland China and Hong Kong, featuring some 400 of the most beautiful voices in the region. It provided a platform for the young choristers to share choral practices and skills, learn new choral repertoires and improve vocal skills, and increase their knowledge in musical interpretations and styles. Four world-renowned conductors from the United States and Hong Kong were invited to lead the ateliers in this wonderful musical encounter.

This two-disc DVD box set brings you the highlights of the International Choral Conference 2007 – the Grand Concert and the Choir-to-choir Concert that took place at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on 12 July and the Chinese University of Hong Kong on 14 July respectively.

About This Centenary Edition

The First Edition of The Sound of St. Paul’s Co-educational College – a double LP album – was produced in 1984 to commemorate the retirement of Dr B M Kotewall, whose early vision for promoting music in education was one of the keys to building the rich musical tradition we now enjoy. Four subsequent editions were produced in 1986, 1991, 1995 and 2000 in commemoration of the various anniversary years of the College. In 2010, the choral album, Faith Hope Love was released internationally on the Naxos label to critical acclaim.

This Centenary Edition again provides a stage where musical talents from the College, its Primary School and our alumni are showcased and their musical moments captured on record. The St. Paulian Fanfare, dedicated to the College’s 100th Anniversary, opens this edition triumphantly, and fittingly precedes the grandeur of this new recording of the School Hymn by no fewer than 500 students and alumni in Hong Kong and as far as in Vancouver and New York. Also notable in this edition is the revival and début recording of the old Chinese School Hymn, which was sung during the pre-war days of the Girls’ College.

The selection process of the highlights from previous albums was not an easy one, where artistic and sentimental considerations must give way to one another. In your hands now are 51 chapters of the distinct sound of St. Paul’s Co-educational College spanning across three decades. They offer glimpses of the glorious past, and equally so, reassurances that the torch of music is burning as bright as ever. The passion and spirit of music-making at St. Paul’s remains unequivocally the same.

Principal, St. Paul’s Co-educational College
Supervisor, St. Paul’s Co-educational College Primary School

About The St. Paulian Fanfare

The St. Paulian Fanfare was written in 2015 to commemorate the Centenary of our alma mater, St. Paul’s Co-educational College. Lasting exactly 100 seconds for emblematic reason, it is intended for use as a signature tune for the College’s celebratory events in the centenary year and beyond.

The fanfare opens humbly yet stately with a brief introduction which builds on a motif using the 1st, 5th and 9th degrees of the scale, and spells out “1915” before the spirited theme brings the fanfare to life. Displaying both boldness as well as lyricism, the fanfare ventures into the relatively unexpected but brighter key of its flattened sixth, symbolic of the College’s mission to be an orchestrator of a brighter future. The brief return of the fanfare theme leads to a climatic end, and the melodic contour of the ensuing closing theme has the Cantonese pronunciation of the College’s affectionately known shorthand (聖保羅男女) , and its motto (信望愛) in mind.

It is on this anecdote that I present you with the Centenary Edition of the Sound of St. Paul’s Co-educational College.
